My area of expertise lies in working with people who are suffering from trauma or have experience of childhood trauma which has profoundly impacted them in their adult life. I also specialise in working with people with attachment issues. Some of the issues that I have worked with include:
Childhood trauma can take many forms, such as emotional abuse, physical abuse, neglect, witnessing domestic abuse or substance abuse which can profoundly affect your life as an adult. This trauma can create feelings of anxiety, depression, panic attacks, eating disorders or difficulties forming positive relationships. Feelings of guilt and shame may have prevented you from ever sharing your experiences with anyone. I can support you through this healing process through psychotherapy, where we can get to the root of the problem and help you reconcile feelings that you have kept buried deep within.
Sadly, grief is a part of life. We all lose someone we love at some point in our lives. But if that loss knocks you off your feet and leaves you struggling for a prolonged period of time, it may be a sign that you need some professional help to move on. Through counselling and psychotherapy, I can help you to better understand and cope with those feelings in a healthy manner, enabling you to integrate the reality of your loss into your life going forward.
If you are having suicidal thoughts, it is a clear indication that you are feeling distressed and unable to cope with some upheaval in your life, either current or past. You feel isolated and unable to control feelings that overwhelm you. Through counselling and psychotherapy, I can help you uncover the underlying trauma which has led to suicidal thoughts and provide you with suicide-specific coping techniques and skills.
Anxiety can take many forms and is a terrible burden to live with. It can leave you feeling exhausted, on edge and overwhelmed. It can make you catastrophise or suffer from panic attacks. Anxiety can affect all areas of your health and wellbeing. Through counselling and psychotherapy, we can unpick your conscious and unconscious anxieties, enabling you to better understand the trauma you hold within yourself and find healthy ways to handle those feelings.
Eating disorders are more often than not an indication that something else isn’t quite right. Through counselling and psychotherapy, I can help you move forward, unearthing the unconscious feelings that lead to an eating disorder and to cultivate self-love and acceptance.
Feeling like you are outside of the heteronormative and cisgendered world can leave you feeling anxious, depressed and disconnected. If you are struggling with coming to terms with your identity, suffering from anxiety, homophobic bullying or abuse, low self-esteem or relationship problems, counselling and psychotherapy can help you come to a greater understanding of yourself, allowing you to express your unconscious feelings and help you find a new way of relating.
Divorce is a major change in your life and can have a significant impact on your self-esteem and self-worth, leading to feelings of anxiety and depression. Your confidence can take a huge knock which can leave you feeling unable to move on after a divorce. Through counselling and psychotherapy, I can help you make sense of this new landscape, giving you the opportunity to explore the feelings and difficulties that you are facing, providing you with the tools to rebuild your life.
Many people struggle with relationships, past and present. Whether it is a problem with communication, if you are struggling with separation, difficulties with family members or if you just find forming relationships difficult, counselling and psychotherapy can help. We can work together to find the root cause of your difficulties and I am here to help you understand the unconscious feelings you may have that are preventing you from forming and maintaining healthy relationships.
Pregnancy and childbirth can be a very difficult time in your life. Whether you are coming to terms with fertility issues, embarking on an IVF journey or struggling to cope with the trauma of a miscarriage, counselling and psychotherapy can really help you make sense of your feelings and find ways to move on with your life.
As a Humanist Integrative Counsellor, my focus is on building a relationship with you; together we shape the process of assessing your problems or issues that are troubling you, working out what will happen in the therapy sessions and evaluating the outcomes together.
I believe in your ability to take responsibility for your choices, yourself and your capacity to overcome your difficulties. I work with you to empower you to realise your goals and potentials, and to help you rebuild your inner child. I firmly believe that you have everything you need inside you; I am just there to give you a fresh perspective and to help you search for and find your own answers and inner peace.
Humanistic therapy encourages you to take responsibility for your thoughts and actions. It is a holistic therapy, focused on the individual. Through humanistic therapy, I focus on helping you achieve your highest potential possible.
Integrative counselling also looks at the person holistically. I focus on building a non-judgemental and trusting relationship, taking into account your physical, mental and emotional needs. As the name suggests, I will integrate different therapies to tailor an individual approach, just for you and your struggles.
With a person-centred approach, I position myself as less of an expert, directing or guiding the therapy. Instead, I offer you unconditional positive regard, congruence and empathy to help you come to terms with your difficulties in your own way and take responsibility for positive change.
Psychoanalysis, based on the work of Sigmund Freud, focuses on the idea that psychological problems are rooted in the unconscious mind. Experiences from your past can be seen to shape your current behaviours, thoughts and emotions. Together, if appropriate, we will talk about your past to try to unlock the feelings that you have deep within, identifying any repressed conflict and bringing the feelings to the fore to allow you to make sense of them.
Transactional analysis combines aspects of psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, humanistic and cognitive behavioural therapy. Together, we explore how your beliefs and the way you interpret the world can affect your emotions and your behaviour. This is done by categorising the human personalist into three states – Child, Adult and Parent – to help you understand how you interact with others.
